Living With An Aging Dog

By Sheryl Hough Golland

Living with our aging 12-year young chocolate Lab, Sophie became a challenge when she developed a fear of slipping on our hardwood floors. How could we help her off of her “island area rugs”? Picking her up was out of the question, she’s 65 pounds of muscle! We tried putting on her leash but that did not work. She’d simply plant herself firmly in place and not move. Next, we tried bootie socks with rubber treads.

That worked for a bit, but she really doesn't like them. Plus it took too much time to coral her just to get them on her paws. Then we hit on a solution, strategically placed yoga mats. They’re inexpensive, remain in place, are easy to clean and do not pose a tripping hazard for the humans in the house. Thankfully she's extremely food motivated. She gained confidence each time she was rewarded for walking on the mats. Going out for her daily walks is enjoyable again.
The house I grew up in was a farmhouse built in the late 1800s- my family moved into that home in the 1950s. And I’ve bought, fixed up, lived in and then sold houses that were built in 1805 (Federal style), 1875 (Victorian), 1900 (foursquare brick) and most recently 2001 (ranch). Moving into older homes reminds me that we are often just passing through, just one set of owners in a longer chain of owners. And this is evident in my garden. The previous owners put in a great raised bed
along the back hillside. I spent the winter wondering what would grow and how I would both keep the deer out and add plants in.

I raked and trimmed and waited. After putting up a rabbit proof fence and topping it with deer proof netting, I cleared the garden of winter debris this Spring, I had to figure out what were perennial flowering plants, and what were weeds! There is an App called "Picture This" which is a huge help - It helped me find out that my garden
already has Lilacs, Peonies, Russian Sage, Wild Indigo, Chrysanthemums, Rhododendrons, and Black-eyed Susans- and yet there was still plenty of room for my annuals of zucchini, yellow squash, bush beans and pole beans, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, and tomatoes!

Summer Picnics UK style

Isn’t it about time for a lazy day in the sun? We deserve it, right? A leisurely, peaceful day, doing as little as possible. So how about a picnic?

Really, just an old-fashioned picnic, not a bbq or elegant al fresco event, but a small intimate, casual outing, say 4 to 6 people, maybe 8 good friends or family. Pick a relaxing destination, a hill-top in the country, a lush green meadow or tranquil lakeside spot, serene, quiet, private, no picnic tables needed!

Elevate Takeout

Think simplicity – a big picnic blanket spread out on the ground, just plop down with your picnic basket, under a shady tree perhaps. Simple fare, no fuss, no muss, all cold goodies, mostly hand-held (remember you’re sitting on the ground with a plate balanced on your lap). Good food, coolers filled with mason jars of cocktails, mocktails or sangria , a bottle or two of wine, preferably white or rose - obviously a corkscrew – cool water, IPA’s or cold lagers. Lemonade, without a doubt.
The Hudson Valley has so many wonderful things to embrace. Many of those are the amazing trails in the area that allow you to get out and smell the clean fresh air. Spending a few hours or just a few minutes enjoying the natural streams and nature's artwork, even in the city parks.
